Visions of Bodies Being Burned by clipping album review
Upon reading the album’s name, I knew it would be interesting. I predicted it would be something I wouldn’t initially go for but would like. I was somewhat right. Clipping is a band I’ve never heard of and went in with an open mind in hopes of finding a new artist to obsess over.
The first track “Intro” set an eerie “I’m being followed feeling” because it was mainly footsteps and creaking noises. Some rapping came into the mix towards the end of the track and I’ll be honest when I say it was a bit of a jumpscare. I felt that the pieces were coming together with the name of the album and the feelings conveyed after that first track. It made sense if they were leaning this album towards a dark side.
With the track following the intro “Say the Name” the repetition of one line stuck out to me and I didn’t like it. Repetition is prevalent in songs but something about this one annoyed me. Once it got to the rapping I had a sudden change of heart and thought “oh this is good”. I was reminded of someone I used to listen to and it brought some nostalgia but I can't remember who. I enjoyed the beat throughout the song.
Similarly to “Say the Name” I liked the rapping in “Check the Lock”. Not entirely sure why that one stuck out to me more than the others, but the melody felt a bit different. Some tracks were purley sounds which I actually enjoyed and felt it was a nice break in between songs. I am curious to know as to why they did that. Perhaps to section off the story they’re trying to tell?
Sounds. Lots of different unique sounds throughout this album. It was an interesting listen and added to this dark vibe they had going on as most of them sounded like they’d be found in a scary movie. With that being said, I also got the heart racing feels scary movies give you and I did not enjoy that. Then there are the track titles. They too were on the spooky side with names like, “Make Them Dead”, “Pain Everyday”, “Eaten Alive”, and “Body for the Pile”. There is a clear feeling or message they are trying to put out with this album though the sounds, album and track names. As for lyrics, it’s a bit more difficult to try to decipher because it is rap and rap is fast. I think there's a different feel when you read the lyrics alongside while they sing to allow the same emotions to come through. It opens the floor to make the understanding of their choice of words and order come to you easier in my opinion. Once I did take a look at lyrics there were sensitive topics like killing, suicide, and overdose. I felt like some tracks did have a storyline within them I could follow, but some were more on the random side.
Well, after a few listens of ‘Visions of Bodies being Burned’ by clippings. I can say I like how different they are compared to other artists, especially rappers I’ve listened to. The various sounds are a nice touch, but were a bit overwhelming for me. Nonetheless I enjoyed their unique style and would be open to listening to their previous or future work.
