Charlotte Day Wilson, a precious discovery
If you’d had asked me a week ago if I liked Charlotte Day Wilson, I would have been
clueless. I did not know who Charlotte Day Wilson was or what genre she fit into.
Therefore, before listening to her debut album “ALPHA”, I had no expectations. In
this case, I was really surprised by her soothing voice from the very first second of
the album’s first track “Strangers”. I think the album showcases Charlotte's powerful
voice, delighting the listeners with her surprising vocal range from low tones to high
ones. Also, the album has a whole cozy and relaxing vibe perfect for those sleepless
nights or chats with your friends. It was the first time listening to Charlotte’s music, so
I can’t compare it to her previous work, but after listening to “ALPHA”, one thing was
clear to me, I needed to listen to more of her songs.
My favorite tracks on the album are “Strangers”, “If I could” and “Keep Moving”. I
loved “Strangers” mid-song change of beat, as well as, the harmony between
Charlotte’s voice and the background choir. For me, it is a good choice as the
opening of the album since it keeps you hooked. In the case of “If I could”, I loved the
beat and the harmonies in the track. It is a song that makes the listener focus on her
voice, principally her high pitch. I recommend listening to it with your eyes closed,
losing yourself in the rhythm and melody. Regarding “Keep Moving”, it's the track I
loved the most because it’s more upbeat in comparison to the rest of the songs.
Moreover, I loved Charlotte’s mid-song falsettos. For me, this song is essential for a
road trip chilling playlist.
I enjoyed a lot the features in the album, especially “Danny’s Interlude” with Daniel
Caesar. The combination of both voices was amazing and the only downside of the
track is that it lasted only 30 secs, it left me wishing for a full track. “Take Care of
You” feat. Syd was a discovery for me, I loved Syd's voice, the rhythm of the song,
and Charlotte’s different voice tones during the track.
Nevertheless, there are a few skips for me in this album. Firstly, “Wish it was easy”,
even though is a really heartfelt song that conveys well the artist's feelings, I found it
a bit monotonous. Secondly, the collab with BADBADNOTGOOD, “I Can Only
Whisper”, had things that I loved like the instrumental part at the end, but again I
found the song quite repetitive. The last song of the album, “Adam Complex” is also
a skip for me. I did like the beginning with the guitar track and the acoustic vibe, but
I would have excluded the artificial sounds mid-song since they made the track a bit
dirty and it was confusing listening to that part. Also, for my taste, it is a bit slow
which made me disinterested.
Even though I’m not used to listening to this genre, I enjoyed the album a lot. It might
be my first time listening to Charlotte’s discography, but I can’t wait for her future releases.
