New Music Monday: Mia Giovina

Tiktok’s “it” girl has just released her second single, and it is to die for!

Maria, otherwise known as “Mia”, Giovina is a 20 year old singer-songwriter from New Jersey. Growing up with a love for music, and writing her own music since she was 9 years old, Giovina has taken this past year to take her passion in a serious direction.

With the state of the world within the last year, having been under a global lockdown, Giovina took to the popular social media platform Tiktok to create content. She quickly gained traction as an artist following the creation of an alternate version of the hit song “Cherry” by Harry Styles. The artist revealed her talent in songwriting by releasing the song from the female’s point of view, releasing it on SoundCloud (Mia Giovina), which now has over 102 thousand plays.

Since then, Giovina has also signed with VH Management, a female-run management company located in New Jersey. She has also surpassed over 175 thousand followers on her Tiktok (@badgirlmimi), and continues to create alternate versions of her favorite songs, such as “Deja Vu” by Olivia Rodrigo and “Little Things” by One Direction.

The singer released her debut single, “Sirens” in March of 2021, and has just released her second, equally emotional and beautiful single, “Time Machine”. Not only does the new track feature Giovina's delicate and enticing vocals, mixed with soft guitar and piano, but she does an amazing job at creating lyrics that we can’t help but relate to. Haven’t we all felt like time is moving by too fast, and everyone is leaving us in the dust? I sure have. “Time Machine” touches on the feeling of longing for the simpler days where, as she writes in her lyrics, “... the worst thing that could happen was my room not being clean”.

With only two singles released, Giovina is definitely an artist to look out for! I can not wait to hear what she has instore for us in the upcoming future!

Artist Rec Friday: Faith and Majesty

It’s time for another Artist Rec Friday, and this week we have an undeniably talented duo from South Florida: Faith and Majesty!

Faith and Majesty are sisters, turned singer-songwriter duo who began their journey creating together in 2016. They specialize in indie folk music, and their most popular single, “Poison”, is filled with heavy drums mixed with acoustic guitar and soulful vocals that will be stuck in your head for days!

There is something incredibly special about families who perform together. Faith and Majesty’s voices blend together in such a natural way, that you can’t help but be drawn in. Their 2021 single, “Premise”, is a prime example of this. Through their journey into making music, the sisters were able to use their shared love to bond closer than they ever were.

The duo has learned to use their songwriting as a therapeutic tool. They choose to release and write music that touches on common struggles and topics, as a way to spread awareness and make their fans feel seen and heard.

In February of 2021, the artists signed onto a small, student-lef record label known as Swamp Records. Their first single released under this label was their track “Premise”, currently at over 2,500 streams on Spotify.

The duo also post content on their Tiktok and Instagram reels rather frequently, whether it be covers or snippets of original tracks! Be sure to follow Faith and Majesty on their journey, I know I will!!

Gen Z Breaking Barriers in the Music Industry

What are the key aspects of being in the music industry is creating connections within your community, and thanks to social media platforms such as LinkedIn, which is dedicated to creating business connections, it has never been easier.

For anybody who doesn’t know, LinkedIn is a massive social media platform that allows individuals to meet and connect with like-minded individuals who are pursuing similar career paths. You were able to create a profile, list your work experience, your proudest accomplishments and qualities, thus connect with others who have similar backgrounds or are chasing the same futures.

Another amazing quality of LinkedIn is the ability for one to post their own career accomplishments. This can create an amazing and encouraging community where connections can congratulate and share accomplishments with everyone in their community, however this also creates a feeling of competition. When you were scrolling on LinkedIn and every other squirrel is a post saying that yet another one of your connections has gained their dream position or a position that is pushing them in the direction that you also want to go in, this can be very intimidating and can feel as though you need to try harder in order to match up with their energy. This then can lead to a need to overwork yourself, thus leading to burn out. “Burn out” is a point that is equivalent to a “breaking point“.

Especially in such a small world like the music industry, it feels as though we must compete with another and fight to reach our goals. This could not be further from the truth and the up-and-coming generation of aspiring music industry professionals are finally starting to witness this. After being a part of multiple conversations and calls on the popular Voice chatting app Clubhouse, I have encountered many individuals who feel as though this new and younger generation are finally to realize that we are not competition, we are resources to one another. A vital part of creating connections is realizing that by offering support and knowledge from previous experiences to our peers not only help them on their journey, but it ensures a positive relationship and connection for future purposes as well.

I cannot be more thrilled to see that many young aspiring music industry professionals are assisting one another in their journeys to whatever goal it is that they dream of reaching. At the end of the day, those around us will end up becoming our coworkers in the near future, so we might as well work together. After all, together we are all stronger!
