New Music Monday - Ashlyn by Ashe

This week, up and coming artist, Ashe, released her debut studio album, Ashlyn, on May 7th, 2021. The album contains 14 tracks, one of which being her hit single and collaboration, "Til Forever Falls Apart", with Grammy-award winning producer FINNEAS. The project also features her 2019 smash single, "Moral of the Story", which was featured in the 2020 Netflix original movie, "To All the Boys: P.S. I Love You". Also featured as a bonus track on the album is the remix of the song, “Moral of the Story”, which features Niall Horan, previously of One Direction. These two tracks definitely helped push her career to the next level as of recently.

Although her debut album was just released this year, Ashe is no stranger to music or the industry. Her debut single, “Used to It” was released back in June of 2017, and her debut EP, The Rabbit Hole, was released in June of 2018. Ashe has released a total of three EP's, including her 2019 EP, "Moral of the Story: Chapter 2".

Ashlyn definitely gives us a glance into Ashe’s incredible lyricism, and her ability to paint a story that I’m sure many listeners will relate to.

The album takes her listeners on a journey; each song covers a different scenario of going through losing a romantic partner, or difficult life moments in general. For example, the track, “Not Mad Anymore”, portrays the moment after a rough breakup where the individual has finally reached a point of closure and acceptance that it is over. This is shown through lyrics such as, “I’m not mad anymore about the madness… Went down like the sun but I still hope the best is yet to come”. Another example of Ashe’s personal songwriting is shown in the second-to-last track, “Ryne’s Song”, which touches on the sorrow and regretful feelings after losing a loved one.

When trying to describe Ashe’s sound, it’s almost difficult to know which genre she should be placed under, but that’s what makes her so appealing. You can hear her musical influence from 70’s rock artists, such as Fleetwood Mac and even the Beatles, through songs on the album like “Kansas”, “Not Mad Anymore”, and “Taylor” (a personal favorite of mine). Her heavy use of piano, tambourine, and guitar provide strong instrumentals that you can’t help but want to hear live.

I can not wait to hear more from Ashe in the future, and will definitely be purchasing tickets to her 2022 Fault Line tour!

Artist Rec Friday - Dodie

Haven’t heard of Dodie yet? Well, we’ve got you covered! Dodie’s music will definitely take you on a journey full of amazing lyricism and equally as amazing harmonies.

Dodie, or Dorothy Miranda Clark, is a 26-year-old English singer-songwriter who began her musical journey by uploading singing covers, as well as original music, on YouTube. Her main YouTube channel, “doddleoddle”, which has now reached almost 2 million subscribers, contains both her official music content, as well as her personal “main channel” content. She also has her second channel, “doddlevloggle”, which she labels as more so a “scrapbook/diary”.

Although her music can be compared to artists like Tessa Violet, Cavetown, and Chloe Moriondo, Dodie’s interesting musicality can really only be labeled as her own sound. Dodie provides a theatrical feeling within her music that almost reminds you of watching a Broadway show, or listening to a Disney princess ballad.

This past week, Dodie released her second studio album, Build a Problem, which features 22 tracks, 14 on “Disc 1” and 8 on “Disc 2”. Prior to this album, Dodie has also released a 2019 album titled Human; featuring her track “She”, her most streamed song on Spotify, racking up over 55 million plays. Dodie first debuted the track on her YouTube channel back in 2015 before releasing it on her debut album. She has also released a 2017 EP, You, and a 2016 EP, Intertwined. Both projects contain a short 6 tracks.

Dodie’s indie, folk-pop sound will have you absolutely hooked! Whether you need chill music to add to your study playlist, songs to cry to in the shower, or something for your chill afternoon drive, Dodie is for you! Although she has been around for quite some years already, I predict we are witnessing only the beginning of Dodie’s career, and her unique artistry will continue to wow us!
