The Warning is Keeping Us Fed With Their Rise To Fame and New Music

By Rebecca Sobrevilla

Ready to rock out with some new music? The Warning has you covered!

The Warning is a rising girl group who are bringing a new perspective to the rock music scene. This trio of sisters from Monterrey, Mexico consists of members: Daniela, Paulina, and Alejandra Villarreal. Each member serves as a jack of all trades as they showcase their dynamic abilities from songwriting, recording, and performing their own music, while also playing their own instruments, such as the guitar, piano, drums, and bass.

Since the band formed in 2013, they have released three studio albums and two EPs. With a dedicated fanbase, they have accrued over millions of streams across music platforms and have sold out countless shows. With the upcoming release of their fourth studio album, Keep Me Fed, they are at the top of their game and are continuously devoting themselves to their work.

At a recent ˚1824 press conference, band members Daniela and Paulina Villarreal gave us all the details on their latest record, tour and more.

Early Years

The band started off their journey in the music industry at a young age. Daniela and Paulina recalled their earliest memory of playing together as a band at only nine, eleven and thirteen years of age. Being such a sentimental and vivid memory for either of them, they can picture the exact outfits they were wearing that day. Although they grew up with fame at a young age, such a concept was never something they focused on, especially when they first started off as a band. The group mainly concentrated on their songwriting and setting a foundation for themselves.

Their upbringing and childhood in Mexico translates into their music even now. The sisters were very fortunate to grow up in such a warm and inviting environment. They say they will always be proud of their background and are happy to be associated with a culture so passionate about their artistry.

Over the last 10 years, the band has gained plenty of traction and have matured sonically and personally through shared experiences. They’ve even made several important connections by working and performing with rock legends such as Foo Fighters, Guns N’ Roses and Metallica.

The support from their family and team throughout this time has been an instrumental part of their success. The family dynamic that they have is very important to them and their creative process. Because of their encouragement and years of hard work, they are able to meet their ultimate goal, which is using their platform to show people what they can do musically.

Inspiring the Next Generation and Fan Support

As kids, the Warning was inspired to pursue music as their profession. Now that they’ve made their dreams come true, they are the ones inspiring the next generation of young musicians. The sisters expressed how beautiful this concept is to them. When kids greet them at shows and say they started to play instruments because of them, they feel so honored and grateful. Paulina says: “That motivates them to do what they want to do. It’s just very lovely to be a part of that cycle”.

With the music industry being predominantly run by men, they realize how important it is to serve as role models for young girls and aspiring female musicians, offering up advice like,“confidence in yourself is key, even out of a music industry box”. When discussing this, they highlighted the importance of speaking up. Paulina reminisces on a time in which she realized speaking up for herself was so important. She explains that during a soundcheck at a music festival, she found herself not being able to hear the music or communications coming from her earpieces. At first, she was hesitant to say anything, but ultimately realized she needed to speak up for herself. Something as simple as speaking your mind can go a long way. Aside from this, they also stressed the importance of having the openness to learn and grow from situations, as well as surrounding yourself with people who take care of you.

Not only are they an inspiration to young girls, but they have a very strong fan base ranging from all ages and genders. The group speaks so fondly of their fans and appreciates all the encouragement. When reflecting on some of their most memorable fan interactions, Daniela mentions a beautiful experience they had in Colombia: “Being greeted in Colombia at freaking 4am with a massive amount of people at the airport just being like ‘Welcome to Colombia!’that was so nice.” After not having slept in a while on that trip, they were overwhelmed to see the amount of support they received from fans. Paulina adds to the conversation saying, “these things happen and there’s such a wide variety of people. There’s older people and then there’s like really young kids there. And it’s just really lovely to have that community of families listening to the same thing and being passionate…”.

The Process and Upcoming Release of Their New Album

While their last album Error was created and produced over the pandemic, they encountered a whole new experience with their upcoming record Keep Me Fed, which is set to release on June 28, 2024. With this project, they really wanted to challenge themselves musically and be open to new possibilities. The band wanted to evolve their sound to something different than usual, while maintaining stylistic choices that still felt like them. Since this latest record was created during a tour, they were able to implement inspirations from different cultures, places and people into their new music. With being on tour during this process, they also had to find time to record their songs. Drummer Paulina mentioned that she recorded drums for the entire album in a day and a half because of their hectic schedule.

When it comes to musical influences, they take a lot of inspiration from artists that most people wouldn’t expect. They really love listening to KPOP groups and find the beauty of listening to music in other languages, noting how this expands their minds and creativity.

In terms of the musical process, they find ease in working with one another due to the fact that they are sisters. Because of this relationship, they feel more comfortable not “sugar coating” their thoughts and opinions with each other. Although the sisters have primarily kept to themselves in past projects, with this upcoming record, they also worked with writers outside their usual team for the first time. While they loved the experience of collaborating with other writers, the process didn’t come without its challenges. Daniela and Paulina explained that they usually work with each other in Spanish, as it is their first language and their most comfortable way of writing. When introducing new writers to the team, they would have to collaborate in English. At times, they felt that the language barrier put a strain on their creative process and held them back from sharing their thoughts. In order to help with this issue, the three sisters would huddle within themselves and converse in Spanish to really bring out their authentic selves. After coming up with a final and collective decision, they would translate it back to the others.

Of course, the sisters have faced creative challenges amongst themselves during this process as well. At the end of the day, they have always been able to manage any disagreements over songwriting and musical choices. Daniela mentions: “I feel like we’ve never let a problem go that far. Maybe we take breathers or communicate.” Paulina adds to the conversation with: “We all want the best for each other…none of us wants to harm the other. You do that with that knowledge and you communicate things calmly or at least try to.”.

After working on this project for some time, they are thrilled to finally share the entire record with their fans. With 4 weeks left until the release of Keep Me Fed, they are most excited for fans to hear “Apologize” and “Sharks”. Paulina says, “people think [the album] is going to be too Pop but then they will hear these and will say never mind.” If you’re not convinced by that statement, the band definitely continues on with the rock genre with this album’s opening track, “Six Feet Deep.” With its electric instrumentals, upbeat tempo and powerful vocals, this is a classic rock song that will be extremely amusing to experience live. Fans are going to absolutely love this track and the rest of the album!

While we wait in anticipation for the release of Keep Me Fed, The Warning has some leading singles such as “S!CK” and “Automatic Sun” that are available to listen to now.

Tour Life and What’s Next for The Warning

With so many great tracks, the Warning loves to tour and perform live. The band was enthusiastic to share what an average day on tour looks like for them: “We usually sleep very late because the shows are late, so we wake up late.” As soon as they wake up, they are met with an incredibly busy schedule for the day: “We have lunch, soundcheck, meet and greet, you take a quick nap if you can and maybe you have interviews in between.” The group of sisters also have quite a few pre-show rituals they like to do. As performers, they really get into the shows and do a lot of physical activity such as jumping, dancing and “headbanging”. Because of this, they like to stretch before shows and really take care of their bodies. Moving around a lot before performances is something they feel they need to do as well. After applying makeup and going to the wardrobe, they get ready to hit the stage. Right before walking out, they also like to hold hands with the rest of their family as they  say prayers and share what they are grateful for at that moment. After their performance, they’ll have post-show meetings, shower, eat dinner and do it all again the following day. This is the lifestyle that the band of sisters will live for months at a time, but they wouldn’t have it any other way.

This is only the beginning for The Warning. With a bright future ahead of them, they have no plans of slowing down anytime soon. This fall, the band of sisters will embark on another North American tour, visiting cities like Los Angeles, Brooklyn, Nashville and more! By appearing at festivals and putting on their own shows, they are ecstatic to be back on the road and share their new music live in person. You can catch them at a show or festival near you!
