A Little Jaded
College Special
By Jessie Strickland
In this month’s episode of “A Little Jaded,” Jade and Joanna reflect on their time as college students as they discuss their newfound identities as college graduates. Joanna, graduating from San Jose State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, and Jade, graduating from Duquesne University’s School of Business in Finance and Information systems, discuss the nature of graduating from their respective fields while striving for careers in the music industry. While discussing their experiences as college students striving towards work in the music industry, balance is a subject that comes up often, as it is often a point of struggle for students.
Joanna brings up the notion that in her experience, balancing school and work was not something she necessarily got “figured out” or worked around, but was something she simply became accustomed to and adapted to. Jade also ties in her own dilemma she’s dealt with in regards to balance, where she had been stuck between being on two ends of the spectrum where unrestricted freedom at college and the urge to “go crazy” were at odds with the drive and focus towards studying and only prioritizing work. Ultimately, it’s important to recognize whether you’re avoidant about the issue or like to tackle it head on, balance is integral to student life, especially during the transition period of becoming an adult and solidifying your own independence.
Along this topic, Jade and Joanna talk about moving out and figuring out long- term goals; for Jade, it’s law school and for Joanna, it’s potentially moving to Los Angeles and finding work in the music industry. It’s difficult navigating the process of deciding how you want to route the rest of your life, but our hosts emphasize the importance of getting started, or just to start thinking about it, as soon as possible, especially as a student. In fact, they reign in the notion that as a student, you’re given more grace when it comes to learning from and connecting with professionals, regardless of industry, so it’s important to take advantage of that asset.
Jade and Joanna share even more valuable insights about the college graduate process and experience in this month’s episode of “A Little Jaded,” so be sure to tune in wherever you receive your podcasts.
